in Oundle Exploring New Repertoire and Style & Technique

STYLE & TECHNIQUE (ST)

13-19 July 2008 at Oundle, Northamptonshire

typical age range 16-22
This programme caters for those who may be sixthform students or who are in the early stages of university or conservatoire. Grade 8 is the gateway.
Given the general fluency that you will already have gained at the organ, you will be ready to benefit from the tutors’ special expertise and enthusiasm as you move into more challenging areas of organ literature. Period fingerings, articulation, organ management, improvisation will all be on the agenda. You will also feature strongly in the students’ Platform Concert, and at Evensong in Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday 19 July.

Oundle
has a great collection of excellent mechanicalaction organs in the town and in nearby villages, all ideally suited for classes, recitals and practising:
  3-manual and pedal Frobenius
in Oundle School Chapel
2-manual and pedal Bower
in the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus
2-manual and pedal Woodstock
in Fotheringhay Church
2-manual and pedal Walker
in Tansor Church
2- and 1- manual and pedal instruments
in Woodnewton, Stoke Doyle Church
and at Creed Chapel Ashton
Access is also planned for students to play the superb, romantic 4-manual Hill/Harrison organ of Peterborough Cathedral.

Oundle International Festival
you are an organist... you are a MUSICIAN!

As ENR and ST students, you will attend concerts at Oundle International Festival, which offers a superb programme of organ recitals (of course!), but also classical concerts, jazz, chamber and vocal performances, and community opera - all to place your organist’s world in a broader context. You will also attend some events at the Peterborough Organ Festival weekend.

Accommodation
Students will live in School House, one of the Oundle School boarding houses, which is equipped to a high level. All meals will be provided. The Festival Club, near the Chapel, is the social hub of the campus – a spacious friendly place in which to relax. Sports facilities will be open for supervised
use at various times.

Travel
Oundle in Northamptonshire is an attractive, historic market town - easily reached by road or rail: by train, travel to Peterborough where we will meet students if required; by car, use A1(M) or A14, both of which pass within 8 miles of Oundle.
If travelling from abroad, London Stansted is the most convenient airport to use (direct rail link to Peterborough).

Awards
Oundle courses are non-competitive but the tutors assess your standard, progress and potential. Awards are offered to provide far-reaching benefits.

Books and scores
All students receive books, scores and magazine subscriptions, thanks to the generosity of sponsors and individual supporters.

Platform Concerts
Most students will be invited to play in an end-of-course composite recital: in Oundle School Chapel at 10.30pm on Saturday 19 July for ENR /ST; in St Catherine's College Chapel at 7.30pm on Saturday 26 July for POS

Organ recitals around the UK
Every year we offer selected students the chance to play at over sixty prestigious venues. Many AA, ENR, ST and POS young organists are nominated to play at churches, schools and colleges all over the UK, where local organists, incumbents and parishioners provide a warm welcome. Promoters provide travel expenses (within the UK) as minimum remuneration.

Fees and Bursaries
The all-inclusive fee for the 2008 AA, ENR/ST and POS courses is £530 per course. Once we have offered and you have accepted a place, a deposit (£180) will be due by 19 May and the balance (£350) by 16 June. AA in Toulouse should be cheaper - please enquire.
Many students gain financial help from their school/church/local organists’ association. But beyond that, we never like to turn away anyone who really should be benefiting from the Oundle for Organists experience, but who may genuinely find the courses too expensive. Thanks to generous benefactors, trust funds and our link with the RCO, we are often able to subsidise the cost.

Pastoral Care
At all Oundle for Organists courses, pastoral care by experienced staff is a vital feature of the arrangements. POS students in Cambridge will also
work with Anglican College Chaplains who direct the liturgy and sometimes can be pursuaded to join in the social life! All pastoral staff and tutors provide CRB Advanced Notices of Disclosure.
